*Press Release from Richmond People’s Climate March – Please share on social media!*
Hello friends and earth activists,
Please save the date of February 23, 2015 for the Richmond People’s Climate March! As the Virginia General Assembly begins to wind down, we want to meet our legislators bright and early to “Sound the Alarm” on climate change in the Commonwealth! We want them to know that we are awake and watching their responses to climate change!
At a time when the world’s leading scientists have repeatedly stated that we must phase out fossil fuels within the next 15 years in order to mitigate rising sea levels and other effects of climate change, Virginia is doing less than the bare minimum to move us toward a sustainable future. With Dominion’s political influence at an all-time high, Virginia communities from the coasts to the mountain valleys are taking the brunt of Dominion’s greed and inaction. The Atlantic Coast Pipeline will tear through generations of family homes and history, will increase the likelihood of soil and water contamination, gas explosions, and will accelerate greenhouse gas emissions. Likewise, our coastal communities in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the Eastern Shore are second only to Louisiana in vulnerability to sea level rise, and now may face the additional threat of offshore oil and gas drilling.
In the spirit of love, justice, and stewardship of our Earth, Richmond People’s Climate March is calling for leaders of our local faith communities to join us on Monday February 23 at 7am at the Virginia Capitol to sound the alarm on climate change and pray for the wisdom of our elected officials as they finalize legislation during the 2015 General Assembly session. In response to the growing global movement for climate and environmental justice, we must empower each other to create the changes we need. We are the joyous resistance!
At 7 a.m. we will gather at the Capitol Bell Tower and then hold a multi-cultural, inter-faith prayer circle, inviting Virginia State legislators to attend as they arrive for work. We will then sound the alarm on climate change with the help of indigenous drum circle, War Paint of Lumberton, NC as well as other cultural performances. Directly following the climate alarm, we will unveil to our governor and legislators, “The People’s Preferred Energy Plan” calling for utility-scale renewable infrastructure, phasing out of dirty coal, and opposing fracked gas and oil drilling in our future. We will then take a short march in the vicinity of the capitol to spread the message of climate awareness to the city.
2015 is poised to be the year that we collectively change the conversation on climate chaos. Last September, 400,000 people marched in New York City, carrying with them a wave of momentum that continues to this day. This is the momentum necessary to turn the tide, in Virginia and across the South. Please join us!
Please forward to your network of activists and supporters. If you have any questions feel free to email me. Since its so early we are offering places to stay for out of town folks. Let me know if you need accommodations. Hope to see ya there!
