Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.~Mark Twain, Innocents Abroad

Marathon

I’m experimenting with writing prompts…today’s was the word Marathon (don’t worry, I’m ok – it’s a gloomy reflection, not my present state).

caught in a storm on a slippery street, they pass me by faster, stronger, more determined.  they will cross the finish line, rewarded for perseverance, off to handling the next mundane or spectacular details of their stable lives, while I, again, fall behind…

the lazy one behind a stream of normalcy, the anxious one behind  high fives and warm blankets and congratulatory signs…the doubtful one behind everything and behind what i once thought could be my self.

in some primordial time i bought the t-shirt and was sent to Earth to run this marathon of mental servitude…therefore I can not quit the race.

Appalachian Trail, Rockfish Gap, Virginia

Aaahhh…sigh. Let me count the ways I love to look at pictures from the Appalachian Trail section hike I did in 2014. Actually, nevermind. That would take forever. Here I am beginning a 4 day trek with Woodstock (also known as my mom!), from Rockfish Gap to Montebello. See the journal entries here: Days 14-16

the first day

If yesterday was the last day of your old life, and today is the first day of your new life, what are you going to do TODAY to celebrate this new beginning?

What do you want for yourself? Do something now that symbolizes the meaning of your life. Put your wishes and hopes and desires into action by CREATING that symbol.  If you have no idea what it is, just sit and wait to receive some ideas. They will come. Drink chamomile tea if that thought makes you restless.

I’m going to make a journal. From scratch. The one of I’ve had since before my AT trip has just a couple of pages left, and I want the symbol of my new era to be something that I’ve made, reminding me of my powers to create, nurture, express, share, love, enjoy.

It’s a rainy day, perfect for cozying up to the kitchen table in sweat pants with a mug of hot tea and a bunch of craft supplies. Get inspired, have fun, and celebrate YO’Self!

I’m so frustrated! Just about all of my pictures from the last 5 months have been…eaten. I don’t know what’s actually happened to them but the thumbnails aren’t associating with the actual picture files, so I can’t access the photos. Big sad face here. Not that I take the best pictures with a stupid camera phone anyway, but I’m still sad that I can’t share some of the great 1000 word images with you. Some day =(

Society Deludes…Nature Rescues

Little Bennet Regional Park – Western Piedmont Trail (6.2m) – Maryland

I doubt I’ve made it a mile in yet but have to stop, as I’ve just taken off my shoes to cross Little Bennet Creek, and already the words were building up so quickly I thought I’d lose them – or resort to writing and walking simultaneously (not wise) – if I didn’t take pause to honor this beauty, this freedom, this life of mine.

I’ve broken a few rules to get to this spot, but I’m caring less and less about rules and the people who make them.  I seriously don’t want to follow any I didn’t get to help make, or that aren’t obviously protecting human, animal, or plant life, or contributing to ecological restoration.
